H13 TOOL Steel Grade Shapes, Sizes, and Technical Information from NEW ARISE METAL :

H13 Tool Steel is an air hardening, 5% Chromium Die Steel which is an excellent choice for a wide range of hot work and cold work applications. It is widely used for aluminum, zinc, and magnesium die casting dies where resistance to thermal fatigue due to alternated heating and cooling cycles is of primary importance. The high vanadium content of H13 increases its resistance to wash caused by the erosive action of the die casting alloy, increase its resistance to heat checking and imparts superior properties at elevated temperatures. H13 also has excellent impact strength to resist cleavage cracking, is easy to machine, can be water cooled in service, and has excellent size change characteristics.

Other typical hot work uses are aluminum extrusions dies and backers, brass extrusion dummy blocks, shear knives, and forging applications. In forging work, it is recommended for die blocks, inserts, punches, pierces, and heading dies.

H13 is finding increasing usage in cold work applications such as die cases for inserted cold heading dies and intermediate Sendzimir rolls. It is often used as cold work shock steel because of its excellent toughness.

AISI H13 Tool Steel is a versatile Chromium Molybdenum Hot Work steel that is widely used in hot work and cold work tooling applications. The hot hardness (hot strength) of H13 resists thermal fatigue cracking which occurs as a result of cyclic heating and cooling cycles in hot work tooling applications. Because of its excellent combination of high toughness and resistance to thermal fatigue cracking (also known as heat checking) H13 is used for more hot work tooling applications than any other tool steel. Because of its high toughness and very good stability in heat treatment, H13 is also used in a variety of cold work tooling applications. In these applications, H13 provides better hardenability (through hardening in large section thicknesses) and better wear resistance than common alloy steels such as 4140.

H13 tool steel is the most popular steel grade for various Industries. The main features of high alloyed Cr-Mo-V Hot Work tool steel is high wear resistance to thermal shock and to heat cracking, good mechanical characteristics & toughness in hot condition.H13 appears excellent machinability with constant hardness during production activities. 

The equivalent steel grade H-13 / SKD61 / AISI H13 normally available in the annealed condition but in some specific applications, we provide Pre-Hard H13 with its standard hardness 460-500 BHN. Utilized for ejector pins, apparatus holders and shrink fit chucks.

As a shock absorbing tool steel, AISI H-13 grade may provide an extra margin of safety in tools subject to heavy hammer blows, and those containing deep recesses or sharp corners. H-13 Tool Steel is 5% chromium hot work tool steel designed for applications that require extreme toughness combined with good red-hardness. It should be noted that, although H13 was designed as hot work steel, it has solved many cold work applications where extra toughness could be gained with some sacrifice of wear resistance.

 

H13 ESR

ESR is the most refined material with the traditional VD route. The quality of material increase the toughness, highly increase the micro- cleanness level. Highly recommend the use of AISI H13 ESR grade for Aluminum Pressure Die Casting & other component subjected to high working temperatures and high pressure strength. H13 is fully ultrasonic inspected with 100% positive results as per NDT standards.

 

About H-13 Tool Steel :

AISI H13 is a tool steel alloy that contains Chromium, Molybdenum and Vanadium. The Molybdenum and Vanadium provide the strength in this grade while the chromium aids in softening the material when it's being used in high temperatures. H-13 is able to withstand rapid cooling and even premature heat checking. AISI H-13 is typically bought to meet Chemistry Requirements rather than physical requirements. For that reason, physical properties are generally not provided unless requested prior to production. Any material can be sent to a third party after production to be tested for physical properties.

High hot-wear resistance and hot tensile strength as well as good toughness, thermal conductivity and insusceptibility to hot cracking. It can be water-cooled to a limited extent. Fabrication and Heat Treatment :

Machinability :

The machinability rate of H13 tool steels is nearly 75% of that of the W group tool steels.

 

Forming :

H13 tool steels are formed by using conventional methods.

 

Welding :

H13 tool steels are readily weldable.

 

Heat Treatment :

H13 tool steels are preheated to 816°C (1500°F). Then the steels are directly heated by increasing the temperature to 1010°C (1850°F) followed by holding for 15 to 40 minutes. The steels are then air-quenched.

 

Forging :

H13 tool steels are forged at 1079°C (1975°F). For this type of steels, forging below 898°C (1650°F) is not preferable.

 

Cold Working :

Cold working may be carried out on H13 tool steels using conventional methods.

 

Annealing :

H13 tool steels are annealed at 871°C (1600°F) and slowly cooled at 4°C (40°F) in the furnace.
