S7 Tool Steel / S7 Shock Resisting Steel

S7 Tool Steel is a shock resisting tool steel with excellent toughness, high strength and medium wear resistance. Due to its maximum shock resistance and high compression strength, it has good deformation resistance and retains good toughness during use. this grade can be machine easily in the annealed condition and it can be heat treated. When quenched in air this material exhibits minimal distortion on hardening. S7 has medium hot work characteristics, making it a tool steel used for both cold and warm shock applications, as well as molds that require high hardness.

S7 Round Bars Shock Resisting Tool Steel is an air or oil hardening tool steel that is characterized by very high impact toughness. The combination of strength and high toughness makes it a candidate for a wide variety of tooling applications. It can be used successfully for both cold and hot work applications. Also suitable for hot work tools where the operating temperature does not exceed 1000°F (538°C). For plastic injection molds, S7 tool steel is available as a remelted, mold-quality product. The remelting process minimizes the number and sizes of nonmetallic inclusions in the steel, and thereby enhances the polishability for critical cavity, insert, and other tooling surfaces.

Shock Resisting Tool Steels are designated as group S steels according to the AISI classification system. S1, S2, S5, S6, and S7 are the types of shock-resisting tool steels. The hardenability of group S steels can be controlled by varying thier composition instead of adjusting the melting procedures and grain size. These steels can obtain optimum hardness at higher austenitizing temperatures. The tempering resistance of group S steels can be enhanced by addition of silicon, which also forms a microstructure to resist distortion in tempered conditions.

AISI S7 tool steel is a shock resistant air hardening steel. AISI S7 steel has exceptional impact properties plus the highest hardenability of shock resisting grades of tool steel. Steel S7 also possesses good softening resistance at high temperatures which gives it hot work capabilities. Since S7 steel hardens in air, it is also safe and stable in heat treatment.

AISI S7 tools steel has an unusual combination of properties, making it suitable for an extremely wide range of tool and die work – where shock-resistance, medium hot-work properties, or ease of machining and heat-treatment are most important.

It is also known as UNS T41907.

Applications of S7 Tool Steel :

Because of its unusual combination of properties, S7 tool steel is suitable and versatile for a wide range of tool and die applications. AISI S7 Steel can be used for hot and cold shock applications, medium hot-work dies and medium-run cold work tools and dies.

Other uses include: Bull Riveters, Concrete Breakers (Moll Points), Riveting Dies, Powder Metal Dies, Notching Dies, Dowels, Drills, Drill Plates, Hubs, Plastic Mold Dies, Cold Forming Dies, Blanking Dies, Bending Dies, engraving dies, machined cavities for plastic molding dies, die-casting dies, shear blades and Master Hobs.

Recommended for cold work tools that require resistance to high impact and shock loading, such as shear blades, swaging dies, gripper dies, chisels, and punches.

Heat Treatment of S7 Round Bar :

This is the process of heating metal to an elevated temperature to obtain change in properties of metallurgical structure. The heat treatment for S7 is as follows:

Forging1800 - 2100°F
Annealing1500 - 1600°F
Hardening1725 - 1850°F
Tempering400 - 1150°F

How do you Temper S7 Tool Steel?

Temper S7 for 1½ - 2 hours for each inch of greatest cross-section. Base your tempering temperature on the end use of the metal: 400°F for cold-working and similar applications, and 900°-1000°F for hot-work applications. Tempering at temperatures less than 400°F is not recommended.

What is the Hardness of S7 Tool Steel?

Hardness tests determine the various properties of a specific metal, which includes its resistance to wear, toughness, and formability. Two widely used tests are Rockwell C and Brinell. Rockwell C is measured in the unit HRC
