Case Hardening Steel

Case Hardening Steel is a type of steel that can be treated to achieve a high surface case hardness with a tough core. Carburising steel grades are commonly carbon and alloy steels. These steel grades can be heat treated to achieve a high surface case hardness with a tough core obtainable when using alloy steel types.

Case Hardening Steel for carburizing and case hardening typically have a relatively low carbon level, 0.10-0.25% C, and are used when there is a demand for varying properties, such as for components in transmissions.

New Arise Metal are stockholders and suppliers of case hardening steel specifications in round and flat bar. It can be supplied as full bar lengths or cut pieces.

Heat Treatment :

Carburising, case hardening may be used on suitably graded steel specifications, surfaces must be free from dirt and grease, and of low sulphur content. Case hardening can be carried out in salt baths with selected content depending on the type of salt and the depth of penetration required. Other considerations during the heat treatment process include the type of furnace, quenching medium and work piece transfer facilities. Time, temperatures and salt selection will be advised by your heat treatment provider.

EN353 Round Bars :

EN353 Alloy steel is a very high strength steel alloy that is hardened and tempered before supplying and has nickel, chromium, molybdenum making its high tensile steel strength, with good ductility and wear resistance. With relatively good impact properties at low temperatures, EN353 is also suitable for a variety of elevated temperature applications. EN353 round bars have good internal strength and high external strength, which makes them highly wear-resistant. EN353 steel round bars offer a good combination of ductility, strength, and wear resistance. EN353 is a very high-strength alloy engineering steel.

Applications • Automotive parts • pinion • gudgeon pins • cam shafts • General engineering components

Equivalent Grades • EUROPEAN STEEL NAME 17NiCrMoS6-4 • EUROPEAN STANDARD EN10277-4

EN36 (EN36A, EN36B, EN36C) Round Bars :

EN36C Alloy Steel is a Nickel-Chromium Case hardening steel which is suitable for deep hardening to develop a touch core is suitable for gears, cams rollers available in diameters only. EN36C Alloy Steel is a carburizing steel grade with very high surface strength with a soft but strong core. The material retains a remarkable degree of toughness. With high tensile strength, EN36C is used in the production of numerous high-strength parts including crankshafts in the automotive and aerospace sector. En36C is used specifically in heavy-duty and highly stressed applications due to its hardenability toughness and high core strength. EN36C also offers excellent fatigue resistance. EN36C gives a hard case with a strong core, whilst retaining a remarkable degree of toughness. Also known as 832M13.This is a nickel-chromium alloy case-hardening steel that is used for many heavy-duty highly stressed applications in many different industries. Steering worms and high-duty gears for aircraft are just two of the areas where this type of steel is utilized.

Adding Molybdenum If you add molybdenum to this steel, it becomes even harder, especially when compared to the 655M13 grade. Its core strength is also greatly improved after heat treatment, as the nickel acts to increase both toughness and its resistance to shock. Today, the EN36C steel is still often referred to as the 832M13 grade, which was its equivalent grade under the previous BS 970:1955 standard. Alloy steel manufacturer services usually include making this type of steel in a round bar, and other associated standards include UK standard EN36, European grades 15NiCr13, and SAE/AISI 3415.

Applications • Airplane and motor crankshafts

Equivalent Grades • BS 970 1991 : 655M13 • BS 970 1955 EN:EN36 • AISI/SAE : 3415 • Werksoff: 1.5752

16MnCr5 Round Bar :

16MnCr5 steel is alloyed case hardening engineering steels for parts that require core tensile strength of 800 – 1100 N/mm² and good wearing resistance. It is an engineering material typically used to manufacture piston bolts, camshafts, levers, and other vehicle and mechanical engineering components. 16MNCR5 Grade is also available in different shapes like Round, Flat, Square steel Bars.

Applications • Double-headed bolts • Valve bodies • Gears • Internal combustion engine • Boring machine

20MnCr5 Round Bar :

20MnCr5 is a case-hardening steel with low carbon content but good hardenability reaching good wear resistance due to high surface hardness after hardening. The small grain size benefits in good ductility and fatigue strength.Suitable for gearboxes and axle gears. 20MnCr5 steel is a low alloyed engineering case hardening steel for parts that require core tensile strength of 1000 – 1300 N/mm² and good wearing resistance. This steel is carburizing steel used for components requiring high wear resistance surface, coupled with tough cores to resist shock loads and strength to give large service life.

Applications • Electric locomotives •Double-headed bolts •Boring machine •Gears •Steel rolling equipment
