SAE 8620, SAE 8620H Round Bars, Forged Bars

SAE 8620 / SAE 8620H Round Bars & Forged Bars

SAE 8620 Round Bars is a Case Hardening Steel. SAE8620 is a Low Nickel Chromium Molybdenum medium hardenability, case hardening (carburizing) steel, generally supplied in the as rolled condition. Characterised by good core strength and toughness in small to medium sections with case hardness up to Rc62 when carburized, hardened and tempered. SAE8620 can also be used (uncarburised) as a high tensile steel, which when suitably hardened and tempered can be utilized for various applications requiring good tensile strength and reasonable toughness. Pre hardened and tempered (uncarburized) AISI8620 can be further surface hardened by nitriding but will not respond satisfactorily to flame or induction hardening due to its low carbon content. SAE 8620 (carburized) is used extensively by all industry sectors for light to medium stressed components and shafts requiring high surface wear resistance with reasonable core strength and impact properties.

It takes advantages of good strength and toughness properties, and has a higher core. The equivalent Chinese material of AISI 8620 alloy steel is 20CrNiMo, which is a common material grade in steel forging.

What is SAE 8620H?

In fact, there is no difference in chemical composition between 8620H and 8620. While add ‘H’, this means that 8620 steel is required to ensure hardenability.

SAE 8620H is a case hardening steel that retains strength, even at elevated temperatures. The “H” indicates the material meets hardenability according to ASTM A304. New Arise Metal stocks many diameters of 8620H hot rolled steel bar available to meet the market demand. SAE8620H is commonly used for small gear parts exposed to low-medium stress. Typical applications for 8620H steel include gears, shafts, and more.

AISI 8620 is suited for applications which require a combination of toughness and wear resistance. This grade is commonly supplied in round bar. It is also known as UNS G86200 . 1.6523 is popularly known as AISI 8620.

Application of SAE 8620 Steel Forging :

SAE 8620 steel forging material is used extensively by all industry sectors for light to medium stressed components and shafts requiring high surface wear resistance with reasonable core strength and impact properties.

Typical uses are: Arbors, Bearings, Bushings, Cam Shafts, Differential Pinions, Guide Pins, King Pins, Pistons Pins, Splined Shafts, Ratchets, Sleeves and other applications where it is helpful to have a steel that can be readily machined and carburized to controlled case depths.

Heat treatment

  • Normalizing : Normalizing can be carried out at a temperature of approx. 910°C. Thereafter, an air cooling takes place. This method is another way to improve machinability. Normalizing may also be performed prior to case hardening.
  • Soft annealing : The material SAE8620 is annealed at temperatures of 650°C - 700°C. This is followed by a slow cooling in the oven.
  • Heat treatment : The tempering takes place at 840°C - 870°C. Depending on the cross section, it is then quenched in oil or in the air.
  • Tempering : Temperatures of 200°C - 700°C are required for tempering to improve toughness with minimal impact on hardness.
