General Properties of Alloy 20 / UNS N08020 :
Alloy 20 (UNS N08020) is an austenitic, nickel-iron-chromium based super alloy with additions of Copper and Molybdenum which provide resistance to hostile environments, pitting, and crevice corrosion. It is also stabilized with Columbium to minimize carbide precipitation during welding. Alloy 20 appears to fall between both the stainless and nickel categories as it contains characteristics of both. It was designed for maximum resistance to acid attack and demonstrates superior resistance to Stress Corrosion cracking in boiling 20% to 40% sulfuric acid, and also has excellent general corrosion resistance to sulfuric acid and to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Alloy 20 has good mechanical properties at both ambient and elevated temperatures, up to approximately 930°F (500°C) and is readily fabricated by usual industrial processes.

Alloy 20 is an iron-base, austenitic alloy with excellent corrosion resistance to a number of different media and proves to be useful in a number of applications such as flue-gas desulfurization, chemical processing, food processing and storage as well as pharmaceutical applications to name a few. Application of the alloy could result in real cost savings when carefully compared to higher-cost alloys to determine if the necessary resistance is obtained in the chosen media. Applications are limited to a maximum temperature of 1000°F per ASME.

UNS N08020, also known as Alloy 20 is one of the “super” stainless steels developed for maximum resistance to acid attack, because of these, there are various uses for it in both the stainless and nickel industries. Alloy 20 seems to fall in-between both the stainless and nickel categories, as it does contain characteristics of both; however, the Unified Numbering System (UNS) does ultimately recognize it as a nickel based alloy, hence the UNS N08020 number.
Alloy 20 is an austenitic nickel-iron-chromium based alloy with additions of copper and molybdenum. Its nickel content aids in its chloride ion stress and corrosion resistance. The addition of copper and molybdenum provides resistance to hostile environments, pitting and crevice corrosion. Chromium adds to its resistance of oxidizing environments, such as nitric acid, and columbium (or niobium) reduces the effects of carbide precipitation. Most welding methods can be used when working with Alloy 20, except for oxyacetylene welding. It can also be hot formed using the same forces required to hot work austenitic stainless steels. In terms of machinability, outstanding finishes are possible using the same set-up and process speeds used for austenitic stainless steels, such as Stainless Steels 316 or 317.

Resistance to Corrosion :
Resistance to sulfuric acid is particularly exceptional but the alloy shows useful resistance in phosphoric acid, nitric acid as well as in chloride environments. Alloy 20 is an excellent option when chloride stress corrosion cracking is an issue and resists pitting and crevice corrosion.
- Excellent resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion in chemicals containing chlorides and sulfuric, phosphoric, and nitric acids.
- Nickel content aids in chloride ion stress and corrosion resistance.

- The presence of Columbium tends to minimize the precipitation of carbides in the heat-affected zone, so the material may be used in the as-welded condition in most cases.
- Pre-heating is not required.
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
- Stabilized-annealing is done at 1750-1850°F, followed by water quenching.
- Stress relieving can be performed on annealed material up to 950°F.
Processing – Hot Forming:
- Heat uniformly to a starting temperature of 2100-2225°F. Finish forging before the stock drops below 1800°F.
- In order to stabilize the material after hot working operations, reheat at 1750-1850°F for a minimum of 1/2-hour per one inch of thickness and water quench.
Processing – Cold Forming:
- Alloy 20 has good cold formability. Bending, drawing and pressing, and other forming operations that occur in the production of fabricated items are readily performed.
- Alloy 20 can normally be press brake bent over a radius twice the materials thickness.
- After cold reductions of more than 15%, a final stabilizing annealing is often required.
- Because of Alloy 20′s high work-hardening rate the following are required:
- Only low surface-cutting speeds are possible compared with low-alloy standard austenitic stainless steel.
- Tools should be engaged at all times.
- Heavy feeds are important in getting below the work-hardened ‘skin’.
Fabrication and Heat Treatment for Alloy 20 / UNS N08020 :
Alloy 20 / UNS N08020 can be formed by either hot-working or cold-work using traditional methods. Hot forged material should be heated between 2100°F and 2250°F with careful temperature control insuring that the material not fall below 1800°F prior to forging. After hot working, anneal the material by heating to 1725°F and 1850°F for a minimum of 30 minutes per inch of thickness followed by water quench.
When stress relieving is desired, heat to a temperature below 1000°F followed by water quench after the desired time at temperature has been established. Annealing Alloy 20 should be between 1725°F and 1850°F for 30 minutes at temperature per inch of thickness. A lower hardness can be obtained by heating to 2100°F but his may have a negative effect on the stabilization of the alloy.
Welding Alloy 20 is commonly performed via, TIG, MIG as well as submerged arc welding (SAW) using either the matching filler metal, ER320LR for TIG and MIG and E320LR for SAW. When welding to dissimilar alloys such as 316 or higher alloys such as C276 and Alloy 22, AWS ERNiCrMo-3 can be used for TIG and MIG while using ENiCrMo-3 for SAW.
